The exact number of species has yet to be determined as classification is still ongoing. Most have accepted that there are 4 genera of 'true' piranha, Serrasalmus, Pygocentrus, Pristobrycon and Pygopristis. The last one includes just 1 species denticulata. Pygocentrus includes, nattereri, piraya and cariba. Pristobrycon include 5 species but the debate is ongoing. Serrasalmus is as yet the largest with around 24 species.

"True" piranhas is referring just to the Pygocentrus species, three kinds. P.cariba, P.nattereri and P.piraya.
The rest are called "Pirambeba" by the natives and are the 26 (not 24) Serrasalmus species and 5 Pristobrycon species.
Two other species in monotypic genera are the Catoprion mento and Pygopristis denticulata. They are partly herbivores, but feed partly on scales and fins and are therefore often included in the "piranha clade".
So in hobby terms, there are 36 species at the moment.
